Where to see Sailing Barges

At the last Committee meeting it was felt that people who like to see sailing barges, but are not quite as involved as some of us, simply do not know where to go to have a good chance of seeing one.

Our splendid Archivist, Don Wright, has put together a list of where to see Essex-based barges, and we have therefore put a new page on the blog showing the information.

UPDATE  Dave Brooks has now compiled similar lists for Kent and elsewhere and these are shown below.

FURTHER UPDATE  Hugh Perks has provided more information.   Tom Lagan, mate of Will, reminded me we had forgotten Will.   And I thought of a couple of others I had forgotten.

  1. Great idea, glad you remembered Kent…

    • I have quite a lot of information for Kent now, so should be putting the list up within the next couple of days.

      • hi there. im the mate of the will and just wanted to see if we could get on the list! she will be at south quay in the west india docks through the winter (5/6 months) then back out based at downings road moorings (reeds wharf)

      • Of course, Tom. Sorry we missed out Will, but we wouldn’t have had the info you have given us, so thanks for that.

  2. gary diddams owner

Hi just gone through your list of barges what about ethel maud at upchurch

  3. Hi Just so your records are up to date – sb DAWN is now back home at Cook’s Yard Maldon. Dawn was built at this yard and launched from the same berth, she now sit on, in June 1897. This is a very rare occurence for a barge to actually be able to lay at the place they were built ,registered and worked from.
Look forward to welcoming you aboard this coming season !
All the best Gerard, Dawn Sailing Barge Trust http://www.dawn1897.com
